The Samurai and the Oni Girl

These are reconstructed miniatures as well as contemporary drawings of Dejima/Deshima Island in the Nagasaki harbor. This was the only place from which Japan conducted foreign trade, and even then only with the Dutch and Chinese for much of the Edo period. Early on they traded with the Portuguese as well, but yeah.

It was a manmade, fanshaped island where traders had to land and stay. They weren’t allowed to leave it, if I remember correctly. Although it was connected to the mainland by a bridge.
